Postcode Areas

To aid the delivery of post the UK is divided up into 121 Postcode areas.  The Area code is made up of one or two letters depicting a town or region.

For example the code RG is taken from the first and last letters of the town ReadinG while the code GU is taken from the first two letters of Guildford.

Postcode Areas were created by the GPO (General Post Office) who are now called the Royal Mail in the years between 1959 and 1974.
